I was born in 1961 in Denver, Colorado, and was adopted by my parents at 10 days. I grew up in Salt Lake City, graduated high school there and went to college at Brigham Young University. For a long time I thought I wanted to be a radio announcer for a career, and spent many years doing that, but it wasn't challenging. I went on to graduate school at Arizona State and with a Masters in Public Administration/JD, and somehow became a lobbyist. In 1989 I moved to Seattle, and in 1991 I started my own lobbying and consulting firm. I closed that practice at the end of 2013 and went into "pretirement" i.e. still trying to figure out what I want to do with the rest of my life. I spend the winters now in Palm Springs, CA, where I sell my photography of abandoned places along the highway in several galleries (http://www.grgardner.com), and I'm working on several writing projects.
