Backroads

A lazy Saturday with nothing on the agenda, coupled with an unseasonably warm dry fall day,  plus the hint of autumnal color and the smell of leaves changing reminds me that another riding season is soon going to end.  It demands that the bike and I head out to enjoy it.  It's no secret that I love backroads -- lazy, windy, two-lane ones with no traffic.  Roads that take their time ambling along, dipping and weaving and turning -- nary a straight line for miles, seemingly going in random directions like a small child with ADD.
One of my all-time favorite singers is the late Kate Wolf -- a wonderful folk artist who penned a song called "Backroads".  It was running through my mind all day today as I wandered around Eastern King County.

"I'll take the back roads home through the open country side, letting things slip by, in drawn out time.  I'll take the long way home on the back roads of this life, taking time to see what goes by..."
"Any place you're bound, you'll get there someday.  You're the one who chooses, what you see along the way.  And when the heartaches seem to much for you to bear, there's a backroad winding everywhere...."
Another season, another year winding down.  When you are younger, the days seem like years -- when you are older, the years seem like days.  Time stops along the backroads -- at least temporarily.   I wandered some 180 miles today, only heading home when the clouds started to roll in, bringing with them the rain forecast for tomorrow and the beginnings of fall.   I'd wander more if I could..."letting things slip by in drawn out time..." and hoping to stop time -- or at least slow it's passage.  The road to nowhere starts here...
