The Wisdom Of Ben

I've written often about my lil' buddy Ben -- he's the youngest son of my best friend Dave and his wife Elyane.  He loves to go riding with me whenever we happen to cross paths.  They live in the East Bay area of California, and so the news of the court case overturning California's Proposition 8 which rescinded the rights of same-sex couples to marry of course dominates the news.  Now I've never hidden anything from Ben, nor has his folks -- and you have to wonder how much an eight year old can actually understand.   Never underestimate them!

Elayne sent me and Tony an email this morning that reads:

Gary and Tony,

Yesterday we were in the car when a news piece came on about the latest on Judge Williams' decision on overturning Prop 8.  Ben wanted to know what "same sex marriage" was.  (I've explained what "gay marriage" is, but apparently not "same sex.")  After I explained, he asked, "Why would a boy want to marry a boy?"  I responded, "Well, some men prefer men to women, and they would rather live with their best friend whom they love."  He thought about that for a second, then said, "Well, I can respect that!"

Kids understand stuff so quickly.  :)

Just want you to know I'm happy for you guys and what this decision means for you.  You know we all adore you both!!

Makes me wanna hop on the bike and ride down and see my lil' buddy real soon.  His birthday is coming up in a few weeks -- I think he needs something special.
