I So Did NOT Need To See This

I have my Olympia office in the closest office building to the state Capitol, and it is a bit of a hamster cage with a number of other contract lobbyists occupying the building and sharing the common conference rooms and such.  A few years ago one of my colleagues got an old sign from a bar that they use to count down to St. Patricks Day -- I'm sure you've seen them, rolling away the days, hours, minutes and seconds.  They are quite common in Irish Pubs.  Well my colleague modified the clock to be "Count Down To Sine Die", which is the latin term used to end a legislative session.

I had some meetings in Olympia today so I walked into my office there and found the clock had been started for the 2009 session which starts on January 12th.  As you can see it says 146 days until Sine Die.  That's April 26th.  I so did not need to be reminded that it's the long session this year, and that I'll be living in Olympia from January to the end of April.  This is not going to be a good session - the state is suffering a major budget deficit, we have a lot of new legislators with "BIG NEW IDEAS" that need to be tempered, and the usual partisan and intra-industry bickering and bitching is heating up already.  Sigh..... I used to really love this job and what I did for a living -- it didn't seem like work.  Not so anymore.  Before everything that happened this year, and the crash of the stock market and economic downturn I was contemplating retiring from the lobbying business in 2012.  I don't know if I can do that anymore.  My personal countdown clock hasn't even begun to start yet I'm afraid.
